sacroiliac: a spinal component. There are 2 sacroiliac joints formed by the articulation between the sacrum and 2 ilium bones of the pelvis. Like the other spinal structures, the sacroiliac joints can be injured through acute trauma, repetitive movements, and poor posture, to name a few. Symptoms of trauma to the sacroiliac joints component include lower back pain with the pain occasionally extending down the back of the leg.

Saepoff, Dr. Jessica, D.D.S: a dentist in Washington that has been practicing as a holistic dentist for over ten years. Dr. Saepoff created Natural Dental Health Associates in 1998 with the vision to make natural, holistic dentistry an alternative choice available to a wide range of people. Before dentistry, Dr. Saepoff began her collegiate experience by studying fine art at the University of Massachusetts. She explored many realms of art including printmaking, drawing, painting, engraving, sculpture, pottery, glassblowing and jewelry making. She was awarded with a Bachelor of Fine Arts for her efforts in 1982. She then attended Indiana University's Master of Fine Arts Program for one year before attending dental school in 1985. This experience and appreciation of fine art is something she enjoys bringing to her dental practice. Dr. Saepoff is active in the community and is involved with many professional dental associations. She is currently serving the public as a member of the State of Washington Dental Quality Assurance Commission, and is serving on the board of directors for the Holistic Dental Association.

Salmonella: a range of very closely related bacteria, many of which cause disease in humans and animals. After Salmonella is eaten it passes through the stomach to the intestine. Here, it binds to the wall of the intestine, and through some special proteins that it makes in response to the particular conditions in the intestine it actually penetrates the barrier between us and the outside. Once it has gained access to our insides, it is taken to the liver or spleen. For most other bacteria, this journey would kill them, however Salmonella has evolved mechanisms to prevent our immune system from doing its job efficiently. In the liver, the Salmonella can grow again, and be released back into the intestine. Of course, not all of the Salmonella pass through the intestinal wall, and many of them are expelled from the intestine in the diarrhea. In regions with poor sanitation, these bacteria can than survive in the soil or in rivers and infect the next person, cow, chicken or mouse that comes along.

Salt: sodium chloride or common salt is the chemical compound NaCl, and is composed of the elements sodium and chloride.  Salt occurs naturally in many parts of the world as the mineral halite  and as mixed evaporites in salt lakes.  Seawater  has lots of salt; it contains an average of 2.7% (by weight) NaCl, or 78 million metric tons per cubic kilometer, an inexhaustible supply. It's believed there are more than 14,000 uses of salt. Many of these uses were for simple things around the home before the advent of modern chemicals and cleaners. However, many uses are still valid today and a lot cheaper than using more sophisticated products. For health and beauty here are few uses of salt: Gargling - Stir 1/2 teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water for use as a gargle for sore throats. Cleaning teeth - Mix one part salt to two parts baking soda after pulverizing the salt in a blender or rolling it on a kitchen board with a tumbler before mixing. It whitens teeth, helps remove plaque and it is healthy for the gums. Washing mouth - Mix equal parts of salt and baking soda as a mouth wash that sweetens the breath. Bathing eyes - Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a pint of water and use the solution to bathe tired eyes. Reducing eye puffiness - Mix one teaspoon of salt in a pint of hot water and apply pads soaked in the solution on the puffy areas. Relieving tired feet - Soak aching feet in warm water to which a handful of salt has been added. Rinse in cool water. Relieving bee stings - If stung, immediately wet the spot and cover with salt to relieve the pain. Treating mosquito and chigger bites - Soak in saltwater, then apply a mixture of lard and salt.

Sanum remedies: three unique lines of supplements and remedies produced by the company SANUM also known as Sanum-kehlbeck. They produce the following unique remedies in Germany and sell them in many countries around the globe: Isopathics (which are the original isopathic remedies developed by the German scientist Professor Dr. Günther Enderlein.), immunomodulators (which are bacterial preparations that raise the immune system's capacity for response nonspecific stimulation), and haptens (which is a newly developed product series of sanukehl preparations that uses a special production process, in which the polysaccharides of micro-organisms are extracted. The sanukehls act as 'antigen absorbers', and they are therefore able to bind pathogen antigens and toxins). These bacterial medications stimulate the immune system response to disease. Unlike antibiotics and other drugs that often require strong doses to kill disease causing agents, Dr. Enderlein's SANUM medications work by changing the harmful microorganisam in the body fluids to non-aggressive forms, which permits gentle self-healing (isopathy). Harmful bacteria and their toxins are broken down and excreted through natural processes. Because these remedies promote healthy cell metabolism and hormonal balance, the body's internal environment experiences profound changes that benefit the entire constitution. Therefore, when treating illness, combinations of different SANUM products, as well as natural medications produced by other companies, are often indicated to restore the internal symbiosis required for good health.

Sanuvis: a homeopathic digestive aid by SANUM. It provides a beneficial form of lactic acid. European health practitioners report that Pleo™ Sanuvis improves pH regulation by breaking down and eliminating harmful D(-)Lactic Acid, which tends to accumulate in diseased organs and tumors. These reports indicate that it may be useful as supportive therapy for pre-and post-operative situations, metabolic disturbances; supportive therapy in chronic skin diseases, psoriasis, functional heart complaints; for support in gastrointestinal and liver disturbances. It appears to be excellent for athletes as it helps eliminate build-up of lactic acid.

Scenar: a healing device originally designed for astronauts. In the early phases of the Cosmonaut program Russian scientists were grappling with the very real scenario of a health crisis in space. In that weightless environment, surgical procedures can not be performed. Because of the confined areas of the space capsules and weight restrictions of the booster rockets, medicines and other health devices could not be taken along at the expense of oxygen, food, and waste disposal equipment. Large, heavy medical devices obviously could not be accommodated. Pharmaceuticals were totally impractical as well since they are designed to be so specific that a large pharmacy of many medications would be needed to cover even a few medical conditions. In addition, due to the limited supplies of potable water, all waste water must be recycled, which would concentrate medications into the drinking water and consequently treat all the personnel whether necessary or not. The program produced the Scenar device, or Self-Controlled Energetic Neuro-Adaptive Regulator. This device was kept as a highly classified military secret until the 1990s after Perestroika (the establishment of Gorbachev’s policies of economic, political, and social restructuring and the breakup of the Soviet Union into its constituent republics). At that time the inventors received patents for the device and it was made available to western countries. The Scenar received approval of the USSR Medical Council (Russia’s FDA) in 1986 and was widely used in Russian hospitals. Many research papers have been published on its effectiveness. The inventors also received the Medal of Lenin (similar to a Nobel Prize) for it.

sciatica: pain, weakness, numbness, and other discomfort along the path of the sciatic nerve -- often accompanies low back pain, which afflicts every adult from time to time, costing billions of dollars in healthcare and more lost days of work than anything but the common cold. Low back pain and sciatica can baffle physicians and other medical professionals, arising without warning and continuing for long periods of time. Sciatica is a symptom of a problem at some point along the sciatic nerve rather than an ailment in and of itself. A herniated disc in the back, spinal stenosis and piriformis syndrome are medical disorders that can cause sciatica. Individuals who have sciatica are often crippled by it, and are driven to seek relief from conventional medical treatment, alternative therapies, and "miracle" cures.

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy:  the sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node ("gland") to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It stands sentinel over the tumor, so to speak.  Lymphatic drainage is a system of vessels that, like the system of veins, drains fluid from the body and returns to a central location. The lymph fluid looks milky. Examination of the sentinel node ("gland") is performed to learn whether that node does or does not have tumor cells within it.

Silicea: a dietary supplement. The chemical make up of silicea makes it easy for the body to use, but it is also eager to make itself useful once taken internally or applied externally. It has the ability to bind to unwanted elements such as viruses, bacteria and inflammatory pathogens, rendering them null and void. This makes it suitable for wound healing, soothing sunburn and insect bites and stings, as well as acne and other inflammatory conditions. By binding to, and aiding the removal of, unwanted bugs, it helps with digestive problems from stomach acidity and indigestion to bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

Skullcap: a Native North American perennial herb, found from New York to West Virginia and southward to South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri. Growing in rich woods, thickets, bluffs and along roadsides. Skullcap is a powerful medicinal herb, it is used in alternative medicine as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, slightly astringent, emmenagogue, febrifuge, nervine, sedative and strong tonic. Some valuable constituents found in the plant are Scutellarin, Catalpol, other Volatile oils, bitter iridoids and Tannins. Scientific studies are proving this to be a valuable plant in many areas for mental disorders. Skullcap is used in the treatment of a wide range of nervous conditions including epilepsy, insomnia, hysteria, anxiety, delerium tremens, withdrawal from barbiturates and tranquilisers. A medicinal infusion of the plant is used to promote menstruation, it should not be given to pregnant women since it can induce a miscarriage, the infusion is also used in the treatment of throat infections. The infusion is given for nervous headaches, neuralgia and in headache arising from incessant coughing, pain, and inducing sleep when necessary, without any unpleasant symptoms following. Skullcap is currently being used as an alternative medicine to treat ADD and a number of nerve disorders. Should be used with some caution since in overdose it causes giddiness, stupor, confusion and twitching.

Small Intestine: the longest section of the digestive tube. It consists of three segments forming a passage from the pylorus to the large intestine: The duodenum: a short section that receives secretions from the pancreas and liver via the pancreatic and common bile ducts. The jejunum: considered to be roughly 40% of the small gut in man, but closer to 90% in animals. The ileum empties into the large intestine; considered to be about 60% of the intestine in man, but veterinary anatomists usually refer to it as being only the short terminal section of the small intestine. In most animals, the length of the small intestine is roughly 3.5 times body length - your small intestine, or that of a large dog, is about 6 meters in length. Although precise boundaries between these three segments of bowel are not observed grossly or microscopically, there are histologic differences among duodenum, jejunum and ileum.

small intestine meridian: an energy channel that starts from the tip of the little finger and crosses the palm and wrist. It runs upwards along the posterior side of the forearm until it reaches the back of shoulder where it ends at the uppermost part of the back (the bottom of the neck). At this position, it first branches off and moves internally through the heart and stomach to reach the small intestine. The second branch travels externally across the neck and cheek until it reaches the outer corner of the eye and then enters the ear. A short branch in the cheek moves upward to the inner corner of the eye where it connects with the Bladder Meridian.

Sodium: an essential element for animal life. The level of sodium in your blood is a balance between the sodium in the food and drinks you consume and the amount in urine. In addition, a small percent is lost through stool and sweat. Many factors affect sodium levels, including the hormone aldosterone, which reduces sodium loss in the urine (aldosterone test.) ANP (atrial natriuretic protein), a hormone secreted from the heart, increases sodium loss from the body. Despite the tight relationship between sodium and water, the body can controls each one separately. The normal range of sodium is 135 to 145 mEq/L (milliequivalents per liter). Higher-than-normal sodium levels may indicate many different conditions.

Sonicare toothbrush: with a design inspired by dental equipment, they provide dynamic fluid cleaning action. It works like tiny, but powerful waves, dislodging plaque that isn't normally reachable by a manual brush, nor the oscillating or rotating movement of other power brushes. In fact, Dynamic Fluid Cleaning Action can actually make it easier to clean plaque below the gumline The bristles on a Sonicare play an important part too. Their high velocity movement creates the Dynamic Fluid Cleaning Action, and allows for direct contact with each tooth. Sonicare's bristles are also designed to be extra gentle on teeth and gums.

spagyric alchemy: a distilling of nature (herbs, plants, minerals) to heal ailments. The two words are defined as Alchemy: "The great work of nature (duplicated in a lab) of transmutation of a base elements into a super conductive energy state." Spagyric: "To draw out, to divide, then to gather, to bind, and to join in the majesty of higher natural concentrate." This is accomplished through an organic-mixing and heating process of the herbal pulp, releasing the mineral salts.

spleen: an organ that creates lymphocytes for the destruction and recycling of old red-blood cells. The spleen is also a blood reservoir. It supplies the body with blood in emergencies such as a bad cut. The spleen is also the location where white blood cells trap organisms. The spleen is shaped like a loose fist and is tucked under the left side of the diaphragm. The average weight of an adult spleen is 0.44 lbs. During and after digestion, the size of the spleen increases. Infection of malaria or mono can also cause the spleen to increase in size.

Spleen acupuncture point: located on the inner side of the leg just above the ankle. Although it is on the spleen meridian, which generally influences the digestive system, this point is also valuable for treating hormonal disorders (irregular menstruation, impotence) and immune disorders. Another key point on this meridian is SP9 (Yinlingquan), located just below the knee. It is used in the treatment of urinary diseases, especially with fluid retention, abdominal and back pain, and female reproductive system disorders.

St. John’s Neuromuscular Therapy: a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system with the structure and the form of the musculo-skeletal system. It is based on neurological law that explains how the central nervous system maintains homeostatic balance. These same laws dictate how the central nervous system initiates & perpetuates pain response and controls the musculoskeletal system. In short the body can refer pain far away from the root cause of the pain. This many times results in the symptom of a problem being treated, rather than the underlying cause. We take a comprehensive look at your body, locate the root cause and solve this problem. It is an amazing way to return to health rather than trying to force a result.

Staphylococcus aureus: a perfectly spherical bacteria that causes a variety of suppurative (pus-forming) infections and toxinoses in humans. It causes superficial skin lesions such as boils, styes and furunculosis; more serious infections such as pneumonia, mastitis, phlebitis, meningitis, and urinary tract infections; and deep-seated infections, such as osteomyelitis and endocarditis. S. aureus is a major cause of hospital acquired (nosocomial) infection of surgical wounds and infections associated with indwelling medical devices. S. aureus causes food poisoning by releasing enterotoxins into food, and toxic shock syndrome by release of superantigens into the blood stream.

stomach meridian: an energy channel in the body that starts from the end of the Large Intestine Meridian at the side of the nose, and passes through the inner corner of the eye to emerge from the lower part of the eye. Going downwards, it enters the upper gum and curves around the lips and lower jaw. It then turns upwards, passing in front of the ear, until it reaches the corner of the forehead where it splits into an internal and external branch. The internal branch emerges from the lower jaw, running downwards until it reaches its pertaining organ, the stomach. The external branch crosses the neck, chest, abdomen and groin where it goes further downward along the front of the thigh and the lower leg, until it reaches the top of the foot. Finally, it terminates at the lateral side of the tip of second toe. Another branch emerges from the top of the foot and ends at the big toe to connect with the Spleen Meridian. Stomach Meridian disorders have symptoms of stomachache, rapid digestion, hunger, nausea and vomiting, or thirst. Other symptoms that relate to disorders along the meridian pathway include abdominal distension, ascites (a fluid build up in the abdomen), sore throat, nosebleeds, or pain in the chest or knee.

Steroidsa group of powerful compounds closely related to the male sex hormone testosterone. Current legitimate medical uses include treatment of certain kinds of anemia. Body builders, long-distance runners, cyclists and various other athletes who claim that steroids give them a competitive advantage and/or improve their physical appearance use these drugs illegally. The major effects of anabolic steroid use include liver tumors, jaundice, fluid retention, and high blood pressure. Additional side effects include the following: for men shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts; for women growth of facial hair, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, deepened voice; for adolescents growth halted prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes.

Streptococcus: Streptococcus pyogenes owes its major success as a pathogen to its ability to colonize and rapidly multiply and spread in its host while evading phagocytosis and confusing the immune system. Acute diseases associated with Streptococcus pyogenes occur chiefly in the respiratory tract, bloodstream, or the skin. Streptococcal disease is most often a respiratory infection (pharyngitis or tonsillitis) or a skin infection (pyoderma). Some strains of streptococci show a predilection for the respiratory tract; others, for the skin. Generally, streptococcal isolates from the pharynx and respiratory tract do not cause skin infections. Figure 3 describes the pathogenesis of S. pyogenes infections. S. pyogenes is the leading cause of uncomplicated bacterial pharyngitis and tonsillitis commonly referred to a strep throat. Other respiratory infections include sinusitis, otitis, and pneumonia . Infections of the skin can be superficial (impetigo) or deep (cellulitis). Invasive streptococci cause joint or bone infections, destructive wound infections (necrotizing fasciitis) and myositis, meningitis and endocarditis. Two post streptococcal sequelae, rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis, may follow streptococcal disease, and occur in 1-3% of untreated infections. These conditions and their pathology are not attributable to dissemination of bacteria, but to aberrent immunological reactions to Group A streptococcal antigens. Scarlet fever and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome are systemic responses to circulating bacterial toxins.

Sugar: there are 4 classes of simple sugars which are regarded by most nutritionists as "harmful" to optimal health when prolonged consumption in amounts above 15% of the carbohydrate calories are ingested: Sucrose, fructose, honey, and malts. Some of you may be surprised to find honey here. Although honey is a natural sweetener, it is considered a refined sugar because 96% of dry matter are simple sugars: fructose, glucose and sucrose. It is little wonder that the honey bear is the only animal found in nature with a problem with tooth-decay (honey decays teeth faster than table sugar). Honey has the highest calorie content of all sugars with 65 calories/tablespoon, compared to the 48 calories/tablespoon found in table sugar. The increased calories are bound to cause increased blood serum fatty acids, as well as weight gain, on top of the risk of more cavities. Simple sugars have been observed to aggravate asthma, move mood swings, provoke personality changes, muster mental illness, nourish nervous disorders, deliver diabetes, hurry heart disease, grow gallstones, hasten hypertension, and add arthritis. Because refined dietary sugars lack minerals and vitamins, they must draw upon the body's micro-nutrient stores in order to be metabolized into the system. When these storehouses are depleted, metabolization of cholesterol and fatty acid is impeded, contributing to higher blood serum triglycerides, cholesterol, promoting obesity due to higher fatty acid storage around organs and in sub-cutaneous tissue folds. Because sugar is devoid of minerals, vitamins, fiber, and has such a deteriorating effect on the endocrine system, major researchers and major health organizations (American Dietetic Association and American Diabetic Association) agree that sugar consumption in America is one of the 3 major causes of degenerative disease.

sulfa (Sulfonamides): a group of drugs that includes those with and without antibiotic characteristics. Antibiotic sulfonamides were the first antibiotics used to treat infections, although today are used much less frequently given their common side effects. Common sulfa antibiotics include Septra®, Bactrim® and Pediazole®. The antibiotic sulfonamides are different structurally from the non-antibiotic sulfonamides, and appear to be much more likely to result in allergic reactions. Many of the sulfa non-antibiotics, therefore, do not cause problems in people with sulfa antibiotic allergy.

Sulfur: the average human body contains about 1 teaspoon of sulfur. You may know sulfur as the mineral that gives rotten eggs their distinctive smell. Sulfur is necessary for the formation of hair, nails, cartilage and tissue. It is needed for metabolism and a healthy nervous system, plus it aids bile secretion in the liver. Sulfur deficiency is only found in conjunction with protein deficiency, and can be alleviated by increasing protein consumption.  Excess sulfur is excreted in urine, so it is essentially non-toxic. It is found naturally in dried beans, cabbage, clams, eggs, fish, garlic, legumes, meat, milk, onions, poultry, wheat germ.

Superfund sites by state with and interactive map: a website that maps out all of the superfund sites in the nation. A Superfund site is an uncontrolled or abandoned place where hazardous waste is located, possibly affecting local ecosystems or people. Sites are listed on the National Priorities List (NPL) upon completion of Hazard Ranking System (HRS) screening, public solicitation of comments about the proposed site, and after all comments have been addressed. Over the past 20+ years, Superfund has located and analyzed tens of thousands of hazardous waste sites, protected people and the environment from contamination at the worst sites, and involved states, local communities, and other partners in cleanup.

Swiss Water Process: a 100% chemical free coffee decaffeination process that results in great-tasting decaf.  Most other processes use chemical solvents, like methylene chloride, to decaffeinate coffee beans.  Conversely, the Swiss water process uses only water when removing caffeine, producing water processed decaf coffee.

sympathetic back ganglia: a chain of tissue masses that runs along the spinal cord and is part of The Sympathetic Nervous System (SyNS).  The SyNS is most active in times of stress but is in operation continuously. This chain of ganglia (tissue masses) which run up either side of the spinal cord is also known as the paravertebral sympathetic gangilonic chain.

sympathetic motor region: extending from C8 to L3 on the spine, this region receives viscerosensory information and contains preganglionic sympathetic neurons, which form the lateral horn. A large proportion of its cells are root cells which send axons into the ventral spinal roots via the white rami to reach the sympathetic tract as preganglionic fibers.  Lower motor neuron nuclei are located in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. They contain predominantly motor nuclei consisting of a, b and g motor neurons and are found at all levels of the spinal cord--they are root cells. The a motor neurons are the final common pathway of the motor system, and they innervate the visceral and skeletal muscles.
